About Me

Welcome. I am a seasoned technologist, innovator, and healthcare improver. I have 34 years of experience in tech and 15 years in healthcare which has given me a bird’s eye view into the challenges that are pervasive in healthcare. My superpower is applying emerging technologies to innovative solutions in any industry. My passion for improvement science allowed me to apply the potential for location-based technologies to some of healthcare’s most head scratching problems.

I started my career as an electrical engineer in aviation and air traffic control. As an expert in radar, I only dabbled in software until, in 1996, I wrote the software for an innovative solution for weather observation in the state of Alaska (weathercams.faa.gov). The success of that product opened some doors and I wanted try something different. In 1998 the Internet was a new and promising frontier and I left the FAA to build web products for some of the worlds most famous brands. Eventually I ended up in healthcare and felt at home with the mission and purpose there. Healthcare was known for being a laggard when it comes to to technology, so it was clear to me I could help. I saw many things that were common between air traffic control and healthcare. Healthcare is a real time environment but it lacks real time tools. The tools that do exist, don’t fit the workflows that so desperately need them.

When I transitioned to healthcare I trained in health informatics to get some formal exposure to inner workings of healthcare. Taking on a masters program later in my career and working full time in a major healthcare system was challenging, but it turned out to be a catalyst for finding specifically where I could have the most impact. It was clear that applying location based services to the complex problems of motion in healthcare would be where I would spend the remainder of my career. I called it Care Traffic Control and that vision is what led to the creation of Navv Systems. With my co-founder, Daniel Siegal, who is a radiologist and computer scientist, we decided that this was something that needed to exist.

Born in a major healthcare system in the Midwest, Navv Systems was using the lessons learned from the front line of healthcare. Using an emerging area of healthcare technology called location-based systems, Navv can automate and orchestrate the movement of people and property, inside and outside the healthcare institution. Like Air Traffic Control, the safety of the people we serve in healthcare and the safety of the people who are delivering that care, is critical. Navv Systems uses cutting edge location technologies, architected for the long haul, to make hospitals and healthcare safer and more efficient. Using the emerging concept of Care Traffic Control, the departments that are on the frontline are using location to become more efficient. Arrivals, departures, and dwell times are calculated, compared, and forecast to allow the coordination of millions of miles of motion.

I am a true believer in fitness as a path toward wellness and longevity. I have done 7 Ironmans and 5 Boston marathons. I did my first marathon in 1984 and my last Ironman in 2014. I have slowed down a bit, but I was able to capture second place in my age group at a half Ironman in Michigan in 2022.

I am also a proud veteran of the US Army where I served in the Infantry from 1982 through 1991, on active duty and as a reservist. The Infantry requires a daily dose of grit, determination and perserverance. I was honored to serve and happy for what it taught me.
